Pros: Excellent Work horse for full frame
Cons: little on the heavy side, not great for crop cameras
I shot about 90% of my photography with this lens on my 5D and have never had a program. Excellent focusing (with the limitations of the 5D taken into account) and true "L" image quality. I picked up a 50 1.4 as backup and have yet to use because this lens smokes it on image quality.
It is a little on the long side for crop camera, and has plenty of heft for it's focal length, but it gets the job done, and that is what matters to me.
HIGHLY recommended if you have 5D.

Pros: Built like a tank, crisp images, and has good af speed that usually hits the mark
Cons: Could be a bit heavy for some people and is relatively large with the hood attached
I use this lens as my main walkaround and it has served me well. The great build and sharp images it produces give me the incentive I need to justify the extra weight. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fast zoom in that range.

Pros: Sharp as a tack, built to last, wondeful contrasty images
Cons: Heavy, can be a bit long on a crop body,
This lens is worth every penny spent. I first had a Tamron 28-75 2.8, and was loving that lens up to the moment I was about to purchase the 24-70L. I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy it, as my Tamron was performing superbly - and now I'm glad I did.
This lens is absolutely SHARP, and the autofocus is dead on, a lot faster than my Tamron. I love the build quality.
My nitpicks are that it's a bit on the heavy side, and if you were to put this lens on a crop body, it might be not be what you're needing on the wide end. It's an excellent portrait lens, and can function very well as an everyday walkabout lens, but if it's on a crop body, you might want to consider a 17-55 2.8 IS.
This lens is pretty much welded to my 5D, and I love it.
