Pros: Cheap! Good IQ
Cons: Build quality, plastic mount, rotating filter thread (arghhh!)
I love this little guy. It's pretty sharp stopped down and has good color and contrast. Build quality is terrible, and the rotating filter thread is maddening. But $80 for this kind of optical performance? Unbeatable.
To clarify, I'm reviewing the standard "IS." The USM version is not a good optic.

Pros: It's cheap. And it often comes with your kit package.
Cons: You get what you pay for - poor quality lens overall.
If you're just a hobbyist, you'd probably be happy with this lens for most of what you shoot. But if you're a professional, this lens just won't do. It's not sharp enough, fast enough or pretty enough - and half the guests at the wedding will have this same lens on their camera.
For your money, the nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8) is a better lens by far.
