Pros: Versatile length on 1.6 crop, excellent optics for the price, great for macro
Cons: Variable aperture, AF is a bit noisy and somewhat slow
I picked up one of these as a backup in case my 17-55 fails. Then I gave it a workout for a day and was really impressed with the results it delivered.
At f/2.8 at the wide end, it's a surprisingly fast lens in its price range and quite capable of delivering attractive shallow DOF with plenty of sharpness wide open. Its colour rendition is great and it doesn't suffer terribly from CA's or other undesirables, even at wide apertures.
It's one of Sigma's better built lenses, in fact I daresay it feels more solid than the Canon 17-55/2.8 IS, and with a hood thrown in it's great value too.
It's also exceptionally good as an entry-level macro lens. Sure, it doesn't hit 1:1, but it does focus very close and I was surprised by what I could fill the frame with.
The only real downsides are the variable aperture and AF noise and speed, neither of which are a problem in casual walkaround shooting, but do preclude it from graduating from my backup bag on professional shoots.
I would happy to travel with no other lenses, however.
