Pros:  Very nice build, good color and contrast, non-rotating element, fast: 2.8
Cons:  noisy and slow (compared to canon USM) autofocus, the dual-focus mechanism

This is the first fast, pro level lens that I have had and I am very happy with it. IQ is very good overall and is exceptional when stopped down to f/4 or 5.6. This is a great lens length on a FF camera body such as the 5D or 1Ds, but I find it a bit to long on the wide end for landscape work on my 20D.

The auto focus, as noted above, is much faster than the kit lenses or the cheap Canon lenses, but is no match for the USM or HSM lenses. It is fairly noisy, but accurate. The front element and focus ring do not turn during focusing, though the front element does extend in focusing and zooming.

The Dual-Focus mechanism, which Sigma says is a feature, I find to be slightly annoying. Although it does mean that the focusing ring does not rotate during focusing, it also means that there are two switches/rings to turn/slide to change from auto to manual or vice-versa.

Overall this is a very nice lens for the money (the Canon version costs about $500 more) and if you can stand for slightly slower and noisier AF, and just a touch of sharpness at f/2.8, this is a great alternative.
